To consolidate finding non-unit fractions of quantities

In this lesson, we will use our knowledge of fractions to consolidate finding non-unit fractions of a given quantity.

We are going to warm up for todays lessons by completing multiplication and division triangles to show the relationship and inverse between numbers. 

We will begin our learning by going through the 2 steps to finding a non-unit fraction of a number or quantity:

Step 1 - Divide the whole by the denominator to find 1 part - so if we were finding 2/3 of 15. We would work out 15 divided by 3, so 1 part is 5

Step 2 - Multiply the part by the numerator -  so in our example we know that 1 part is 5. If we multiply 5 by the numerator (2) we get 10. So 2/3 of 15 = 10

To identify the power of advertising

Persuasive language and writing in an advertisement helps to sell products.
It sends a positive message about the product or service.

It helps to aim the advert at a particular type of customer.
It makes it appeal to the reader’s personality.
Its purpose is to sell.

An advertisement that does this can lead a customer to believe that their product can help you to be; happier, successful, fashionable and less stressed. Some adverts can make people feel; unique and special, healthier, more intelligent or even better looking!


Think about a favourite advert that you enjoy seeing on the TV or hearing on the radio. Think about the positive message, the aim and the appeal of what is being sold.

- Who is the product aimed at? How do you know?

- How does it appeal to the people watching the advert?

- Can you spot any bossy or persuasive language in the advertisements?




Your task
Answer the questions of the 'Power of advertising' activity by thinking about your favourite advertisement. You will need to think about whether your advert has a slogan or has some music. Think about if the advert makes you want to buy/use that product. How would you improve the advert? Hint: Think about the features that of an advertisement that we have covered in this unit.


What are some of South America’s most important human features?

In this lesson we will recap our knowledge of the seven continents of the world, then we will zoom into the continent of South America. We will name and locate the countries of South America and their capital cities. We will then look at some of the human features.

We will finish the lesson by discussing that economic activities are those that involve producing and selling products or services so that a country can make money. We will look at which economic activities take place on the continent.
